You can use any standard barcode scanner to scan in both microchip barcode stickers AND barcode labels on retail items. The scanner will simply populate the barcode number into the field your cursor is in. 

The barcode number for retail items should be included in the item name field of the non-adoption shopping cart item in Configurations. See this article here for more information on setting up non-adoptions shopping cart items.
