Petlink Microchip Registration Overview

Petlink utilizes Shelterluv's API to provide almost instant updates to your Petlink registry account when you process an adoption outcome in Shelterluv.

To learn how to get an API key and send it to Petlink, please take a look at How to Set Up Your Microchip Integration.

Note
The Petlink integration is built and managed entirely by their team, not Shelterluv. Our role is to provide access to your data through our API with your authorization. Since the integration was developed and is maintained by them, any issues you’re experiencing will need to be addressed directly with the Petlink team.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Petlink will only upload Petlink brand microchips. The number on the animal record must start with 981. If you want to register a microchip from another company, you can pay a one-time fee. Contact PetLink for current, up-to-date pricing. This registration has to be done manually in your PetLink account and will not be processed via Shelterluv's PetLink integration.
  • If an animal has more than one microchip, only the most recently added chip that begins with '981' will be uploaded, so you will need to manually register the other chip(s) through your registry account. (The other option is to wait a day before adding subsequent chips.) When an animal has more than one microchip implanted, none of the chips are considered the "primary" because any one of them could be picked up by a universal microchip scanner first. This means it is important that each chip's registration is kept up-to-date.
  • When you enable the integration, Petlink will fetch the previous 90 days of registration data from Shelterluv. This integration is only designed to enroll PetLink microchips.
  • Yes. Additionally, if any microchips were not registered, you will also receive an explanation as to why.
  • If the microchip is already registered and the email address in PetLink matches what you provided, then no further action is necessary.
  • If you purchase the PetLink microchips directly from PetLink, they can provide you with a chip list to compare against your Shelterluv data.
