The Attributes section of your account's configurations will contain one subsection for each species your organization works with and one subsection for people attributes. The species you selected in your Animal Population configuration section determines what appears here. You can learn more about that here: How to Configure Your Animal Population
Click your Username > Configuration > Attributes to get started.
What user permissions do I need to configure attributes?
- Configure my shelter and its users
Configuration is only accessible through a desktop or laptop. You cannot access the Configuration section on a mobile device.

Animal Attribute Overview
Once you select the desired species in your Attributes section, you will see four subsections:
- Fixed Behavioral Attributes
- Custom Behavioral Attributes
- Fixed Physical Attributes
- Custom Physical Attributes
Behavioral attributes will appear green on your animal's record, while physical attributes will appear blue.
-
Fixed attributes are preset in every Shelterluv account and cannot be deleted or renamed. These attributes correlate directly with your aggregator uploads (Petfinder & Adopt-a-Pet), which is why they cannot be edited or deleted.
Click here for more information on how these attributes get translated and sent to your aggregators.
-
As the name implies, custom attributes are created by your team for your account. There is no limit to the number of attributes you can make, but we recommend keeping the number to a minimum to avoid mistakes and overwhelming your staff.
How to Add a New Animal Attribute
Follow the steps below to add a new animal attribute:
- From the Attributes configuration section, choose a species.
- Scroll to either the Custom Behavioral or Custom Physical Attributes subsection and click the Add Attribute button.
- Enter the new attribute's name and click the green checkmark button to create the attribute.
- Adjust the new attribute's configurations as needed (discussed below).
Animal Attribute Configurations
Now that we know how to add a new animal attribute, let's look at what each configuration does.
|
Each animal attribute can contain stored text that you can use to provide extra context for that attribute. The stored text will initially appear as a pop-up when the attribute is added to an animal's record that you can then edit as needed. Any edits made will only affect that specific animal record. Typically, the stored text is used in direct correlation with adoption disclaimers. |
|
Toggle this setting to display the attribute on your standard adoptable animals iframe. For fixed attributes, toggling this on will send the attribute to your aggregators (Petfinder & Adopt-a-Pet). Please review Information That Is Sent to Your Aggregators for more information on how these fixed attributes are sent and translated. |
|
Toggle this setting to display the attribute on the animal's kennel card. |
|
Toggling this setting will display this attribute and its stored text as an adoption disclaimer to the adopter during the Shelterpay checkout. The adopter must then read each disclaimer and confirm that they have read and understood it. Once the adopter provides their digital signature during the checkout process, the adoption disclaimer document will be generated on the animal's profile with their signature. |
|
You can use the trashcan icon to delete a custom attribute completely. Deleting a custom attribute will remove it from both in-custody and outcomed animal records.
Warning
Deleted attributes cannot be restored. |
Person Attribute Overview
Since person attributes are for internal use only, creating and editing person attributes works slightly differently than animal attributes.
There are four person attributes in every Shelterluv account, and they cannot be edited or deleted. These attributes are:
|
This attribute will automatically display on any person record actively fostering an animal. |
|
You can add this attribute to any person record to create your do not adopt list. |
|
Add this attribute to a person record to create a flag next to their name. |
|
When you add this attribute to a person record, it will automatically send out an email to the foster that will allow them to set up their foster portal. For more details on this, please review this article. |
