How do I transfer ownership or custody of an animal?

We know that animals often move from one owner to another after being outcomed from your shelter or rescue for many different reasons. Shelterluv now has functionality to support these custody changes.

You can update an animal's record to be listed with a new owner in one of two ways.

1. From the animal's record

If you navigate to the animal's existing record, you'll find a blue "Transfer to new owner" button from the History tab and Caretaker subtab.

Clicking this button will trigger a new pop-up that asks for the approximate date of the transfer, a free entry text box if you'd like to enter notes about the transfer, and a field to enter the new owner's name.

  • The field for the new owner's name is an auto-complete field, which means that as you begin to type the person's name, matching names will start displaying below the field. These names are all people that have existing records in your shelter or rescue.

  • If the new owner doesn't have a record yet, choose the "**Add a new person" option to create a new record for the person in the process of completing the transfer. You will need both their email and phone number to create a record for them in this process. If you do not have either of these pieces of contact information, please create the person record separately first before starting this custody change process.

Clicking "Save" will complete the transfer to the new owner. 

 

 

2. From the former owner's record

If you navigate to the former owner's record and to the Animals tab, you'll find a related option under the green "Select" button for each adopted animal.

Clicking "Transfer to New Owner" will trigger the same pop-up as described above that asks for approximate date of the transfer, a free entry text box if you'd like to enter notes about the transfer, and a field to enter the new owner's name. 

Clicking "Save" will complete the transfer to the new owner.

Important Notes:

  1. You cannot undo any custody changes unless you delete the outcome prior to the custody change as well.
  2. Custody changes are not independently reportable events.
