This article will provide a complete walkthrough of processing an adoption return intake from start to finish. The "Configuration prerequisites" section below lists items in your configurations that will need to be completed prior to intaking an adoption return.

Configuration prerequisites

Before you complete an adoption return intake, you will need to make sure you have the following items configured and set up properly in your Shelterluv account:

• Configure your adoption return intake form
• Configure your adoption return contract
• Configure your statuses

Processing an adoption return intake

To begin, navigate to the appropriate person record in your Shelterluv account and select the "Animals" tab. From here, choose the "Return" option in the dropdown menu from the green "Select" button next to the appropriate animal record. Please note if you see "Owner Surrender" instead of "Return", the animal's outcome has passed your configured return threshold.

Once selected, you will be presented with your configured adoption return intake form to fill out. Once this form is filled out, select the blue "Print Adoption Return Contract" which will open your configured contract on a new tab.

The Adoption Return Intake flow does not currently support the collection of a digital signature. You will want to print this contract in order for the adopter to provide consent and physically sign and date their return. You can then upload a scanned copy onto the animal and person records for future reference.

After printing the Adoption Return Contract, return the original tab to select the blue "Finish" button to finalize the return intake and place the animal back into your custody.

Return/owner surrender threshold

Why do I only see an "Owner Surrender" option and no "Return" option on a person's record?

Some rescues and shelters want to establish a threshold of a certain amount of time when adoption returns are actually considered owner surrenders. Users with configuration permissions can decide whether or not your shelter or rescue wants to use this type of threshold via Configuration. From your gear icon, navigate to Configuration > Return/Surrender Threshold. From here, you can choose whether or not you want to enable the threshold, and if enabled, the number of days you would like the threshold to be. Intaking an animal before that threshold is met will be considered an adoption return, while intaking an animal after that threshold will be considered an owner surrender.
