MetLife (PetFirst) pet insurance is a great solution to those surprise vet visits and costs that all pet owners experience and provides a valuable safety net to rely on. Below are some frequently asked questions regarding MetLife pet insurance to help you get started.

How do I cancel my insurance policy and who do I contact with questions?

A.

You can check on your enrollment status and/or cancel your insurance policy directly through Metlife. Their contact information can be found here:

Q.

I initially declined insurance coverage, but have changed my mind. How do I sign up for pet insurance?

A.

Great news! Everyone is eligible for MetLife pet insurance through Shelterluv! Simply visitadopterluv.com/insurance for the same coverage options that were offered to you during your Shelterpay checkout.

Additionally, if you received a quote in checkout (opt-in) but did not purchase the policy, you will receive one follow-up email with policy information and the option to purchase. If you activated your Adopterluv account, you will also have the link listed above available inside your account if you wish to purchase coverage at a later date or for other pets.

Q.

Is there a waiting period before the insurance policy starts?

A.

If you purchased coverage during the Shelterpay checkout or via Adopterluv, the standard 14-30 day waiting period if purchased from MetLife directly is waived. The policy coverage goes into effect at midnight on the day of the purchase.

Q.

Why do I need pet insurance?

A.

A small monthly payment can help you prepare for unexpected vet expenses down the road. More than 6 in 10 pet owners said their pet has had an emergency medical expense. 24% of pet parents have credit card or personal loan debt to cover pet health and vet costs. The average annual cost for a routine vet visit is $212 for a dog and $160 for a cat. The average annual cost for a surgical vet visit is $426 for a dog and $214 for a cat.
