This article will provide a complete walkthrough of processing a return to owner outcome from start to finish. The "Configuration prerequisites" section below lists items in your configurations that will need to be completed prior to processing the outcome.
Configuration prerequisites
Before you complete a return to owner outcome, you will need to make sure you have the following items configured and set up properly in your Shelterluv account:
- Configure your return to owner outcome form
- Configure your return to owner outcome subtypes
- Configure your return to owner contract
- Configure your return to owner outcome shopping cart item(s)
Processing a return to owner outcome
To begin, navigate to the "Animals" tab on the person record that the in-custody animal needs to be returned to. From there, select the blue "Add Animal" button and choose "Return to Owner/Redemption" from the dropdown menu.
Selecting "Return to Owner/Redemption" from the dropdown menu will open a list of in-custody animal records in your Shelterluv account. Once you locate the appropriate animal record by using the search bar or the filters, select the green "Return to Owner" button, then choose the correct return to owner subtype from the dropdown menu, and finally the grey "Checkout" button.
Completing the checkout and capturing a digital signature
At this point in the process, the animal record is completely outcomed in your Shelterluv account and if you do not have a contract or fees associated with return to owner outcomes, you are finished.
Once you select the grey "Checkout" button, you will be presented with the following screen to choose an item to add to your shopping cart.
Remember, even if you do not charge a return to owner fee, you will still want to have a shopping cart item configured so that you can text the checkout to the owner to capture the digital signature on your contract. This will also give the owner the option to add a donation. Shelterpay will never ask the owner for credit card information if your shopping cart item is configured to $0.00 AND the owner does not choose to add a donation.
Once you've located the appropriate shopping cart item, select the green "Add to Cart" button and then the grey "Checkout" button.
From here, you can text the checkout link through Shelterpay just like a normal Shelterpay adoption by selecting the blue "Continue with Payment" button. Once the owner receives the link and opens it, they will be able to review and digitally sign your contract, give a donation if they choose to, and pay the fee if applicable.
